INTERVALS is an exhibition curated by João Marco Deloie presenting works by 6 contemporary artists based between Geelong and Melbourne. It centres photographic and video practices, featuring the diverse works of Cecilia Sordi Campos, Michael Danischewski, Joshua Maxwell de Hoog, Jahkarli Romanis, Ammar Yonis, and artist-curator João Marco Deloie. Works range from landscape photography to self-portraiture, depictions of place, and other investigations in the photographic discipline.
INTERVALS examines how artists respond to notions of place in their work. Operating within a photographic frame of reference, and acknowledging the medium's history and tropes, it highlights documentary and photo-based practices that explore ideas of place in dynamic relation to culture. This is sometimes in direct reference to location, and other times without site-specificity.
INTERVALS investigates how the concept of place can be understood as both material and immaterial, ideological and esoteric, and something that stretches far beyond a physical space or locality. How can examining place in image-based practice reveal new historical narratives and alternative readings of a particular place? Or offer up new truths to the self?

João Marco Souza Deloie is an Australian born artist of Brazilian-German descent. João's practice is centred around photography, video, and filmmaking. João lives and works on Kulin Country (Melbourne). João is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Film and TV (Honours) at the Swinburne University of Technology. João's work synthesises cultural practice into his artistic practice, providing visibility through a decolonising lens. João's work was previously shown in the group show New Photographers, as part of the PHOTO 2022 festival at James Makin gallery. His solo exhibition, Aîkugûabeté, exhibited at Testing Grounds as part of the 2021 Yirramboi Festival. Úira, was the outcome of his 6-week residency at Brisbane arts organisation House Conspiracy.
