The means through which we acquire, collect and remember can take many forms. For artist Lachlan Stonehouse, the role of still and moving image in the construction of narratives, fictionalised or true, is explored through a series of collages.

The premise of the work exists through observations of the outside world, and recordings of inner spaces. Ultimately piecing together traces of the real, in order to fill the gaps in. The things Stonehouse selects, addresses a specific moment, becoming reconstructed memories, sensations lost within film scenes, family photos, or materials that lurk within a desk drawer. The works create an almost certain stability, solidifying the fleeting moments and slippery memories within moving images, or the passing of time. The desire and the despair, illustrated within the artists own fictitious realities, embarks on a journey of how memories are relayed, and Stonehouse’s own specific interest within cinema, and the construction of narratives.

At a glance, the works may act as an attempt to decipher the modes of storytelling, which are at play, and the lens we place over the experiences we have of people, objects, places, and time.

Lachlan is a Melbourne-based artist, originally from St Helens In Tasmania, working primarily with textiles, the family archive and collecting things.
