60-minute immersive dance and installation performance

Myth and memory meet motion in this multidisciplinary work by Co-tempORaRY Dance - a collective of Chinese diaspora artists led by Jiawen Feng.

Drawing on The Classic of Mountains and Seas 《山海经》and the holistic philosophy of Zhuangzi, four dancers blend Chinese classical and contemporary movement amid an installation of flowing colour and suspended time, accompanied by real-time motion-capture projection. Shifting hues and fluid forms create an environment where bodies, sound, and digital echoes merge.

Audiences are invited into a constantly shifting world—at once ancient and futuristic—that asks:

How might we exist not as individuals, but as a shared ecology?

Language: Non-verbal / English introduction

Sensory warning:  Low-light environments and occasional sudden lighting changes, including brief strobe-style effects.

This work is funded by a City of Greater Geelong Arts Project Grant. Supported by Platform Arts and JMC Dance Lab

  • Co-tempORaRY Dance is a Melbourne/Naarm–based collective of Chinese diaspora artists working across dance, installation, and interdisciplinary performance. Rooted in both tradition and innovation, the group draws on Chinese classical and contemporary practices to craft works that are intimate yet expansive.

Through collaborative creation they explore movement as a living archive of memory and migration, sharing stories that are honest, fleeting, and constantly evolving. Their projects range from site-responsive installations to stage works, inviting audiences into spaces where heritage and experimentation meet.

  • Dancers: Jiawen Feng, Ke Li,(Coco) Wenjie Chen(Freddie), Weichen Cui
