Quantus is an exploration of and documentation of three spaces: the physical environment, the virtual space and the imagined. Throughout this body of work, Liam Herne wishes to play with the idea of how these 3 worlds intersect and juxtapose each other.
The catalyst for the artworks in this series was the restrictions imposed on all of us in lockdown. The artist sought to try to create work based around the idea of confinement or being restricted to the domestic environment, both mentally and physically. The question posed by the artist to himself whilst making the work was "how can I create artworks with limited space and resources?"
The resulting works see Herne making imagined sculptures and installations in his home and around his suburb in Queensland. They simultaneously highlight mundane or everyday spaces whilst also explore how constrictive it can be to stay in one environment for extended periods. Most of the artworks in this exhibition have been created using Augmented Reality apps on a phone. This adds to the idea of limitations or constraints explored in the work as the artist was restricted to the capability of his device and the orientation and ratio aspect of the screen.
