An exhibition of contemporary women's self-portraiture (or humans who Identify as women) and how they use lens-based media as a tool and mechanism to subvert the colonial, western and patriarchal gaze. Given the long history of stereotyping and othering embedded within photomedia with it being indexical and representational (Barthes 1977; Barthes 1981); honorific and repressive (Sekula 1986); gendered and imperial (Azoulay 2011; 2019; Sontag 1977), Refusal and Futurity explores how seven women use this problematic frame as a beautiful tool of subversion.

Curated by Jody Haines, this timely exhibition comprises additional events that invite the public to engage with the artists and further explore the themes and methodologies behind the body of work.

From May to July we have multiple events and public programs linked with Refusal / Futurity.

Join us on Saturday May 10th for our opening event and a pre-event talk with the featured artists.

Jody Haines is also facilitating a Field Trip workshop on May 17th.

Deep Listening and Making with Country on May 17th explores creating camera-less photographs through a lumen process.

Releasing in July, Refusal / Futurity artists will collaborate with Pia Johnson on the Out of Frame podcast. They will be discussing their work, practise and how they use the frame as a beautiful tool of subversion.

Finally, on July 12th, Jody Haines will be running a Self Portrait workshop to assist those involved to create their own self portraits in a studio setting.
