The first Australian screening of a feature film in two parts by Irish artist and filmmaker Padraig Robinson. Masquerades of Research: Part I & II, 2020-2022 explores the impact of the controversial research of pre-queer sociologist Laud Humphreys.

Part I begins in St. Louis in 1967 to give poetic insight into how the civil and social rights movement created the backdrop for his still controversial PhD, Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places.

Part II begins tensely in Los Angeles in 1975, where Humphreys is on the cusp of republishing Tearoom Trade in the radically different post-Stonewall and post-Watergate USA.

After the film, Padraig Robinson will join us in-person for a Q&A to discuss the relevance one of sociology’s most radical studies and how it relates to contemporary discussions of intimacy, social presentation, surveillance and data control.

  • In Padraig Robinson’s work, the fleeting emotional and visual potential of film combines and juxtaposes different histories, temporalities and social themes in unexpected, complex, yet legible ways.

For his first exhibition in Australia, Robinson will present the installation A Faggot is a Unit, developed for an artist book of the same name, published in collaboration with Have a Nice Day Press.

Here, seven years of research for film and publishing works are used as a substrate for a retrograde moving calendar work for Platform Arts, Geelong.

The exhibition includes a 20 April screening, as part of the Geelong Pride Film Festival, of Robinson’s feature film Masquerades of Research: Part I & II, 2020 - 2022, followed by a Q&A with the artist.
