A People’s Guide to (North) Geelong is a project that braids elements of social practice, place-based exploration and digital storytelling into a collaborative exhibition.

Platform Arts engaged 8 young people from Indie School (North Geelong) as a cohort of honorary artists and Norlane residents to become guest contributors and local experts on the project. The team travelled through Geelong's north to meet and interview residents in the Norlane community, discovering the human and more-than-human stories along Cowies Creek and Labuan Square.

"I've met such wonderful people. I remember at church there was an older lady from Norlane, of Italian origin…her son would come home after school and bring all these friends. And she just was this, you know, salt of the earth mother…And gave them Milos and cups of tea and biscuits and cakes. And people started to call it the United Nations because she said there was someone from every country on earth around that table.

You know, so she used to open her home and say, 'welcome to the United Nations.’”
—senior resident of Norlane

Their research has culminated into a collaborative audiovisual installation that celebrates the stories and places of the Norlane neighbourhood. The immersive exhibition uses stunning animations and visual storytelling to convey how people and places are never as they seem.
