Things Felt captures Geelong through its urban texture and materiality. The installation uncovers Geelong as place through texture, colour and touch, and stimulates a conversation about location as a physical and emotional experience.
Things Felt is comprised of fabric suspended over a cast-plaster floor. These textural casts are taken from urban surfaces around Geelong, such as brick walls, stone walkways, etc. Using a colour palette based on photographs of the area, dyes will be swirled throughout some of these squares, connecting to the hues on the printed fabric. These abstract and figurative prints – a response to the textural casts – will be hand-printed with linocuts.
Things Felt is an exploration of texture of our shared material world, highlighting the City of Design’s unique and intimate tactile surfaces. Things Felt is designed to share understandings of a space and our experiences of it – both felt through our textural grounding to place.
This event is part of Geelong Design Week 2022, an initiative of Geelong UNESCO City of Design and the City of Greater Geelong.
Things Felt is by artists Rhys Cousins and Lucy Maddox, under the collective Tangere. Connect with them on social media: @tangere_texture & @lucymaddoxart
