PART v.

PART V.

This week, we made “sound” sculptures for each other. We realised earlier that many of the things we gave each other were flattened—photos of our domestic dealings, textual exchanges. We wanted to create something that felt 3D, something we could touch. So naturally we felt sound was the medium that allowed for a sort of ‘being there’, a vehicle to transport the other into a space we made for them, whether that’s ‘next to me on the couch’ or ‘inside my wired mind’.

KAR-MEN TO SAMANTHA:

I started with our questions to each other, and a re-occuring motif in our exchanges– our domestic space. I also thought about Sam’s intent to connect with her Singaporean heritage and her use of rice as a medium to express this intent.

This track is my reflection of our wonderful time together – the questions, the intimacy, the gentle attempts to hold each other.

Like how much of our communication unfolded in our own language of making, the conversation you hear is made up solely of our words and rice.

Sam’s response

SAMantha TO KAR-MEN:

Listen, when walking. Listen, when showering. Respond: a gestural movement; a scribble.

The act of collating a playlist for another, causes rumination upon signified interpretations of instrumental sound and lyrics. Is this: too kitschy; too sombre; too placid; too much of a love-letter?

I sought to construct a musical journey for Kar-men—moving between upbeat sensations of jazz or funk and resolving in deep reverberations.
