Deanne Butterworth is a highly regarded performer, choreographer, and teacher whose practice is preoccupied with the investigation of movement and how it relates to the physical, emotional, and sonic space in which it is located.

Based in Naarm/Melbourne since 1994, she has shown her work and performed in the works of other choreographers including for Next Wave Festival, Dance Massive, NGV, NGA, Joyce Theatre Soho, Dance New Amsterdam (NYC), Hong Kong Fringe Theatre, PAF (France), WestSpace, Gertrude Contemporary, Bus Projects, Art Gallery of NSW, Dancehouse, Lucy Guerin Inc., Melbourne Fringe, Critical Path, Potter Museum, Carriageworks, Temperance Hall, MONAFOMA and more.

Between 1996- 2018 Deanne performed in the work of choreographer Shelley Lasica making notable contributions to over 20 of Lasica’s performance projects as well as collaborating with Lasica on DUELLE (Centre for Contemporary Photography 2009), How Choreography Works (WestSpace, 2015) and How How Choreography Works (Art Gallery of NSW for Biennial of Sydney 2016). She has a long term working relationship with Jo Lloyd performing in her works since 1999 as well as creating multiple collaborative projects with Lloyd. She has also worked with choreographers Lucy Guerin, Phillip Adams, Tim Darbyshire, Rebecca Jensen, Shian Law, Sandra Parker, Brooke Stamp, amongst others.

Deanne’s work has been situated in galleries, theatre, for film, museums, & outdoors. In 2017-2019 she was a studio artist at Gertrude Contemporary creating multiple new works for live gallery performance and video including: Remaking Dubbing (2018), Gertrude Glasshouse, Melbourne Art Fair & Alexandra Club; Gret, For a Moment (2017), & Furniture (2018) both at Gertrude Contemporary. Other artist residencies and study include include: International Workshop Festival, London (2000), Bundanon (2009), Dancehouse ‘Housemate’ (2010), International Immersion PERFORMA NYC (2011), City of Melbourne Boyd Studio Residency (2016), Resident Artist at Temperance Hall (2019), Fitzroy Gardens Pavilion Studio (2021).

Deanne teaches regularly at Chunky Move Company, Lucy Guerin/WXYZ Studios, and has taught at VCA, RMIT, Deakin University.
