Platform Arts is wheelchair-accessible via our Gheringhap St entrance. Unlocked, accessible bathrooms are available on both ground and first floors.
For accessibility enquiries, please directly contact us at hello@platformarts.org.au
PLEASE NOTE if you are new to exhibiting and require significant assistance with installation, we ask that you bring your work on Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, as our Curator Amber Smith will be onsite to help.
From August 12 to September 20, Platform Arts will hand over the control of their gallery curation in an open-call exhibition and events program titled After Walter Hopps. Over 18 days, artists from Geelong, Surf Coast, Bellarine, and surrounding regions will have the opportunity to exhibit on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. The overall aim is to fill the gallery from floor to ceiling, wall to wall, in a show that takes shape both cumulatively and expansively.
This exhibition is inspired by Walter Hopps' 36 Hours project held at MOTA (Museum of Temporary Art), Washington, USA in 1978. A renowned non-conformist, maverick curator, and transcender of boundaries, Walter Hopps devised this seminal project as an invitation for any artist to take their work to the gallery without any chance of rejection or censorship.
After Walter Hopps aims at removing the restrictions enforced in an institutional gallery setting – opening it up for civic reclamation through showcasing the works of all who dare to call themselves an artist, irrespective of profile or reputation.
After Walter Hopps draws artists of all ages, ranging from emerging to established. The exhibition is a great opportunity to support the local arts community while purchasing art at accessible prices.
AUG 12—31 | INSTALL PHASE
Artists are invited to drop off works in Gallery One or the Platform Arts office. Installation will take place periodically by Platform Arts’ install team, who will create a ‘salon hang’ to make the most of the space and display the works to the best aesthetics possible.
SEP 04—20 | EXHIBITION
With the installation phase closed, After Walter Hopps opens to the public. This year, instead of an auction, artists will have the opportunity to list their works for sale.
FRI SEP 20 | CLOSING EVENT
The exhibition and art sales will close with a celebration event.
Pre-registration is encouraged, via the register form. This allows us to send minimal communications such as important updates and artist opportunities such as the 10% discount kindly offered by Frameline.
For artwork submissions, bring in your work to our internal office during our submission window hours. If you require significant installation, we ask that you submit your work on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. See the opening hours for artwork submissions (left) and please read ‘the fine print’ guidelines below.

Registration of your interest is encouraged, to communicate important updates and opportunities for artists.
Registered artists can receive a 10% discount on framing services from Frameline, Geelong. Being artists themselves, Frameline's staff love framing artworks and are knowledgeable on the trends and expectations of art purchasers.
For submissions, show up with your work during our opening hours (see top of page).
Upon arrival, artists will be asked to fill out a digital form to identify their work, set their sale price (if selling their work), and provide contact details.
Platform Arts staff will be in the gallery or office to accept works, and artists can communicate the install needs. Platform Arts staff will be installing the works by order of receipt as a 'salon hang' outside of business hours. Final curatorial decisions rest with Platform Arts staff to accommodate factors such as spatial accessibility, safety, and the care of previously installed works.
Artists can choose to list their works for sale. We will not be running an auction this year.
To keep the submission process free, Platform Arts will take a 30% commission on all artwork sales. This is to contribute to the installation staffing costs, marketing, party activities, and administration costs.
Works will be installed around those already installed in the space. The installation staff will take care not to obscure, cover or damage another person's artwork.
Purchasing works: Works will not be reserved until payment is made via Platform Arts. For works priced over $1000, we require 50% deposit to reserve the work, which is non-refundable. Balance must be paid within two weeks, or the artwork will be returned to the artist. These terms are not negotiable and are in place to encourage legitimate purchases and protect artists from forfeited reservations of their work.
Purchased works will be immediately labelled with a sold sticker but must remain installed for the exhibition's duration.
Both sold and unsold works must be collected on the closing night. Due to our current full capacity for excess art storage, any artists or buyers not attending the closing party must pick up their work by 3.00PM, Saturday, October 05
Any works abandoned by either artists or buyers will be dealt with at our discretion. Unfortunately no refunds can be issued in this scenario. If you're unable to pick up the work yourself, please arrange for a friend or courier to do this for you. Contact us prior to confirm your alternative arrangement.

This exhibition takes its inspiration from Walter Hopps' 36 Hours project held at MOTA (Museum of Temporary Art), Washington, USA in 1978. A renowned non-conformist, maverick curator, and transcender of boundaries, Walter Hopps’ seminal project 36 Hours was an open call for any artist to take a single work to the gallery without any chance of rejection or censorship, where he would personally hang the works as they arrived. The show was inclusive, making no distinction between artists or selection of works, the only limitation being a size restriction.
