‘pneuma’ is an experimental work from an ongoing explorational project into the relationship between sound and our surrounding landscape. In response to recent extreme weather conditions, Sophia D’Urso began to experiment with the repercussion of sound and how it can be embodied in miscellaneous objects. ‘pneuma’ will showcase two sound sculptures formed during this exploration on Platform’s upstairs balcony along with additional off-site documentation.

Sophia D’Urso is a multi-disciplinary artist working primarily within installation and performance. She is interested in the structure of space, often working within site-responsive environments. Her concepts are centred around her investigation into the fields of perceived rules, parameters and constructed limits that exist in relation to space and subject.

Please note: due to the nature of this work, there will be no official opening event for this show. The work will be available for viewing during PLATFORM opening hours.

This exhibition runs alongside the 2020 Port Fairy Folk Festival.

When considering the meaning of human nature and pondering what is universal to all, folk music is an undeniable truth of the human condition. All cultures, from all generations have expressed their histories, experiences and knowledge through song. Folk music in a sense is what defines a culture, but it is also what brings different cultures together. Folk music and the arts have shown to provide a forum where diverse peoples can come together, share their histories with one another, and gather in a respectful and nurturing environment.

For the past 44 years, peoples of all backgrounds and ages, from every continent have gathered on Peek Whurrong country, to immerse themselves in the beauty and power of folk music at the Port Fairy Folk Festival. ‘The Force of Folk’ explores the history of this folk festival and explores the diverse histories and experiences it has brought into discussion. Through archives, discussion with key members of the Australian folk community, audio and visuals, ‘The Force of Folk’ will bring to light the power folk music has in connecting and galvanising communities, continuing knowledge, stories and histories- and most importantly how it truly is the essence of the human condition.

Presented by Platform Arts and Deakin University, Energetical is a program of symposia, exhibitions and workshops on Thursday 12 and Friday March 13, focusing on the value, labour, experience and intergenerational knowledge of female-identifying artists and arts workers living or working in regional Victoria.

Energetical will be the first event of its kind in Victoria, where leaders from our regional arts organisations will provide guidance and insight into closing the gap on the remuneration, opportunities and economic security of female practitioners. They will delve into topics around diverse and inclusive programming; legacy art projects; navigating contemporary arts practice; and connecting across the geographical divide between practitioners, organisations and audiences in regional areas.

We're thrilled to partner with Deakin University and facilitate a major event for arts practitioners and leaders from across our region to share knowledge, discuss, debate, network and forge connections. We hope you can join us for this amazing forum and help make it a mainstay for the artists of our future.

Proverbs 23:27 - ‘For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.’

In their 11th solo show, and second time exhibiting at Platform Arts, artist Frances Cannon presents Ungodly Woman. Frances reimagines biblical sluts, sex-workers, and victims of abuse through a modern feminist and queer perspective. Ungodly Woman features a number of tapestry-like works, juxtaposing holy and sinful, feminine and masculine, soft and hard. Ungodly Woman is both a celebration of these strong characters in such an important piece of religious literature, while still critiquing the treatment and expectations of women in a Christian religious context.

Frances Cannon is a queer, multidisciplinary artist based in Melbourne/Narrm. She works predominantly in drawing and painting in ink, gouache and watercolour. Frances is well known for their simple yet nuanced style of black and white illustration. Frances' work examines ideas of body-love and body-loathing, anxiety, relationships, sex and sexuality, gender, and bodily functions. Their work can be viewed as diaristic as it is based on personal experience. Frances has been involved in ten successful solo shows at galleries including Tinning Street, Off the Kerb, Courthouse Youth Arts Centre, and numerous group shows at galleries including: Montsalvat, RMIT Gallery, Neon Park, Rubicon ARI, and Fort Delta. Frances has worked with with Teen-Vogue, Gucci, Refinery 29, Third Drawer Down, and has been published in Frankie, Yen, Teen-Vogue, Bustle, HuffPost, Dazed and Confused, Vogue, SBS Australia, i-D Mag, Rookie and many more. Frances is the co-owner and director of Pink Ember Studios in Coburg.

A CEO is crying in front of a mirror. His nose is gone. Worse. It’s running through the city streets dressed up as the President of Honduras.

This is the moment it’s been waiting for. This is its chance for freedom. The Nose is a hilarious farce about people falling to pieces amid total economic chaos.

The Nose has taken inspiration from Russian author Nikolai Gogol’s famous short story and turned it into something reflective of the dystopian post-paradise of our time.

Winner of the Festival Directors Award at the 2017 Sydney Fringe Festival.

Adam and Eve are really digging Paradise. They are happy, super happy in their hermetically sealed Eco SphereTM.

There’s no judgement here. No shame. It’s the perfect place for some relentless fornication. But nothing this good lasts long. Satan’s sick of the cherubs getting stuck in the ventilation shafts. He tried to complain but God chucks him out. So be it, Satan thinks. In hell, a napalm covered wonderland, Satan hatches a masterplan. And so the fall begins.

PARADISE LOST is a satirical adaptation about the narcissism of creation and our fading hope for the future.

Skyglass is a trio of violin, guitar and shakuhachi, performing original music. From spacious soundscapes to driving polyrhythms, each instrumentalist incorporates sung and spoken word into engaging and moving performances that explore the fragility of existence.

Emily, Anne and Yyan have collaborated in various combinations since 2015, bringing together influences of western classical, Japanese Zen, Celtic folk and finger-style acoustic steel string. Anne lives in Victoria and Yyan and Emily in Tassie, so sometimes they perform in duo combos and sometimes all three together. Following an Arts Tasmania wilderness residency in Hastings caves in 2017, the trio performed to sold-out audiences in wilderness areas around Tasmania. In 2019 they presented their ‘Heart Moon’ program weaving original music and poetry inspired by the moon and cosmos in another acclaimed and sold-out concert tour of Tasmania. At the end of this tour they chose the name Skyglass for their trio with plans to make more music and concerts together.

Years later, their daughter finally discovers the identity of the dark stranger who has been at the edge of her life, and becomes the first person to befriend the Reaper.

This creative development work is A Final Act of Democracy before the world combusts, a space where impossible solutions spark hope for the future.

The last Futurological Congress was held in Costa Rica in 1970. The world’s finest scientists congregated on the top floor of the Hilton. But the proceedings were interrupted and the records buried under fifty years of civil strife.

The Bloomshed have uncovered these documents, scouring them for solutions to our current crisis. The Futurological Congress looks backwards to look forwards. It’s a space where impossible solutions spark hope for the future.

J.J. Ham: Improvising Polyrhythmic Space

Musician and architect J.J. Ham performs his Improvising Polyrhythmic Space solo show for NEAL at Platform this Feb.

In collaboration with Uwe Woessner, J.J. developed a Virtual Drumming Environment (VDE) as an experimental vehicle through which to explore the relationship between music and space. The VDE enables the real-time spatialisation of live digital drumming in Virtual Reality where audience participants can experience and direct dynamic 3D drumscapes in virtual space. These spectacular spatialisations compliment vast soundscapes generated from polyrhythmic drumming that operate across the multiple genres from ambient to industrial. Jeremy’s performance is completely improvised.

These improvisations operate across the musical domain, the spatial domain and within a newly imagined ‘musico-spatial’ domain where sound and space meet. Improvising Polyrhythmic Space pushes the boundaries of polyrhythm beyond drumming’s known worlds and thus will engage with the ideas behind the New and Experimental Arts Lab.

Jeremy (J.J.) Ham has been part of the underground Geelong band scene since the 1980’s, playing drums with local artists including John Nolan (Powdermonkeys), Compost and Surfusion. Jeremy recently completed a PhD in Architecture and Design at the SIAL Sound Studios at RMIT that explored the continuum of musico-spatial creative practice using the digital drum kit as his vehicle for exploration.

Uwe Woessner is the head of visualisation at the University of Stuttgart High Performance Computing Laboratory. Uwe developed the coding for the VR visualisation.

MY OTHER CLOSET: THE CABARET

WORKSHOP:

6 FEB, 9.30AM - 4PM

Evening Performance:

7 FEB, 7PM

Matinee Performance:

8 FEB, 12PM

My Other Closet is first and foremost a celebration of LGBTQ people’s ability to triumph in the face of extreme adversity. My Other Closet: the Cabaret is also a community education project that raises awareness about domestic violence in LGBTQ relationships and celebrates the survivors. The cabaret format is a powerful way of reaching one of the most marginalised and difficult to access parts of the rural LGBTQ communities; people experiencing DV.

The show presents strategies for avoiding or leaving potentially abusive relationships, and provides tailored information for victims and potential victims as well as intervention methods for bystanders. This project functions as a unique health promotion tool that builds empathy, understanding and the will to act through the emotional impact of musical theatre, while celebrating the resilience it takes to proclaim “I Am What I Am”.

The message of My Other Closet: The Cabaret is: Everyone deserves to feel safe, and to love and to be loved without fear. Everyone.

You can also attend a workshop facilitated by Rainbow Health Victoria with the performance on Thursday 6 February. Tickets here.

In early 2002, Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski and Wilbert de Joode first got together as a trio at a small venue in Amsterdam. Since then, the three musicians have been touring and performing internationally.

The trio’s music has been completely improvised from the outset, created in the moment. There have never been any rehearsals prior to concerts, premeditated structures or concepts – a fact that frequently flummoxes listeners, critics or even fellow musicians, as the three often manage to evoke the impression that their music could indeed be adhering to compositional presets. Kaufmann/Gratkowski/de Joode combine the transparency of early 21st century chamber music – silence, the moving into and out of noise regions, textural juxtapositions, the relics of almost tonal harmony surging up then evaporating just as quickly– with the energy, the rhythmic momentum and unpredictability of jazz and other rhythmically more aggressive musics.

The three spontaneously weave compact pieces full of intricate, multi-threaded interaction. (...) The group can construct spare, riveting music from the quiet hush of bristling detailed textures. They can also shape improvisations that build to a full-bore rush of heated intensity. But what stands out most is how they do this with such a highly-developed group sound...

Michael Rosenstein, Signal to Noise (review of kwast)

Four accomplished soloists from across the globe join forces to create rich and detailed landscapes of expansive textures. Featuring Norwegian percussionist Ingar Zach, Italian flutist Alessandra Rombolà, Spanish accordionist Esteban Algora, and Australian clarinetist Aviva Endean, the ensemble create their music with improvisational and compositional parameters side by side. The ensemble emerges from a spontaneous meeting in Madrid where Aviva first worked together with the well-established o3 trio. Drawing on their shared backgrounds in improvisation, contemporary classical music and experimental practice the ensemble worked together to develop a unique language of subtle virtuosity, breath inflections, shifting accents, and fluctuating drones with a keen attention to group interaction and long-form structures to create lush and hypnotic sound worlds.

More on o3:

O3 works across musical genres having  worked with Merce Cunnigham Dance Company, the Norwegian experimental circus company Stella Polaris and with the musicians Jane Rigler (USA, flute), Kim Myhr (NOR, guitar) and Jim Denley (AUS, sax/flute). Their debut album: "…de las piedras”, was released on the english label Another Timbre in 2007 and received excellent reviews.
