LILY YAP

LILY YAP

Lily Yap was born in Timor-Leste, to a Chinese family. She immigrated to Australia when she was a child. Growing up she often contemplated which culture she identified most with, how she should call herself, and how she fit into Australian culture. She grew up in Melbourne and, at her secondary school, she learned to oil paint and explored art making. During university, she spent much of her free time working, saving money and backpacking overseas. She worked in Timor-Leste and Palestine after her studies. Her time overseas helped form her understanding of herself and her identity.

After a long hiatus from art making, Lily returned to oil painting again during early parenthood. The sleep deprivation, limited freedom, her new responsibility and identity as a mother, inspired Lily to paint and draw again. In her paintings, Lily explores her family life, where her subjects were her partner and daughter. She painted to make sense of her world, her emotions and her thoughts as well as to feel a sense of calm in her new chaotic life.
