In a modern world where addictive, advanced technology lives in our pockets, it’s easy to forget that humans are, at our essence, wild and natural beings. It’s easy to forget how reliant we are on a natural world (that is teetering on the brink of extinction due to human activity). In these relentless “unprecedented times”, many of us have realised the importance of our surroundings, and the necessity of finding, or deepening our connection with nature.
We exist in symbiotic relationships with other living things, relationships that provide nourishment in the form of food and clean air. Not only that, but our minds, bodies and spirits are nourished too. Spending time with nature has an abundance of benefits including lowered blood pressure, reduced muscle tension, a greater tolerance to pain and stress, and increased feelings of peace.
Curated by Phoebe Thompson, Earth includes artworks by Lucy Allinson, Molly Burrage, Tilda Mae Clarke, Nic Everist, Kajeera Jenkins, Michaela McHugh, Jessi Rebel, and Kiri Tawhai. Artists involved are inspired by trees and rivers, bark and skin, the swell of the ocean, the colours of clay & Country. Gently collected organic materials, living things, and growing greenery.
Earth incorporates traditional landscape painting to paintings made with the landscape, alongside video works, printmaking, photography, sound, and sculptural works that weave together ecological understandings and complex relationships to land and Country.
